Wesley the Owl

I'm not even sure where I want to start with this book? It was kind of given to me as a prank, but after reading some reviews on it, I thought...sure, I'll read it and give it a try.

A true story (more like a memoir) about Stacey O'Brien, a biologist, who adopts a baby barn owl at just 3-4 days old. The owl, Wesley, had nerve damage in one of his wings and would never survive in the wild. So Stacey adopted him and raised him like she was a mother owl.

This was one of the most touching stories I have ever read. The book is intertwined with facts about owls, Stacey's and Wesley's life together, and Stacey's personal life as well. By the end of this book, I felt like I knew Wesley and Stacey personally. I feel like they are friends and that I have had them in my life for a long, long time.

I was so sad when the story ended. I was sad that there wasn't more to read about Wesley. I wanted it to continue.

So, the ever present question now that I've finished the book is....Am I still afraid of owls? I am not afraid, just creaped out by them. But since finishing this book, I have a whole new respect for this truly amazing creature. Yes, they still creap me out a little, but this animal that I thought was brainless is such an intricate mixture of personality and emotions.

I know I am not giving this book justice with this review, but the feelings that I have about it just won't come out. The knot in my throat is just too large. I can tell you, however, that Stacey and Wesley are now embedded in my heart...FOREVER.
