Girl Talk

Junior Hospitality hosts a very special service project each year called Girl Talk. You may recall that were supposed to do it on Jan 31, but the wonderful Oklahoma weather put it on hold. Well, this past Saturday, we finally got to have it.

The event is held for Emerson HS girls. Emerson is an alternative school and most of it's students are teen parents. During the first semester, the girls must excel in their attendance and in their grades. It is quiet an honor to get to come to this event. They have a sleepover on Friday night and then, us girls from JH, come in on Saturday and do our best to entertain them for 5 hours. Basically, it is time where they get to feel like teenagers again, since their daily lives are a struggle.

This is the whole group...

Jazz Hands!!!

We started our morning with a fun little ice breaker to get to know each other. We had 5 Emerson girls and there were about 10-15 JH girls there. After the ice breaker, Nicole taught us a fun dance to a Black Eyed Peas song. It has been forever since I've danced and I felt extremely old. But it was very fun and GREAT exercise.

After the dance, I got to do my part, by teaching the girls who to make their own Notepad CD Tin. I was so nervous...wondering if they were gonna like it or not. I am excited to say that they did!!! I'm not sure they really enjoyed putting it together, but I know they really liked the finished project. Nicole has already told me to be thinking about my project for next year's event...hehehe.

Working on our projects...

Look how cute they turned out!

We also taught them how to make a healthy breakfast/snack and played some catch phrase to wrap up the day.

I was exhausted when all was said and done, but I am so glad I did it. These girls have had some really hard lives and it was nice to know that for a short period of time, I was able to be a part of bringing a smile to their faces.

Me cheesing it up during craft time!
