The Huntress

While Quinn and I were at the Owasso band contest a couple weekends ago (more on that in another post), Ashton and Tony had a father/daughter day.  They spent the day taking an online hunter safety course and getting Ashton her very own hunting license.  To be completely honest, I thought this would be a fly-by- night interest for hers and she wouldn't really like it that much.

Last Friday the two of them went on their first hunting excursion together.  Tony's parents have 5 acres, so they set up their stands there.  Tony helped Ashton climb into her very own tree stand (and yes, I made sure he was gonna harness her up since she was 15 ft up the tree).  Then Tony got into his stand about 10 feet away in a different tree.

Ashton used the crossbow and Tony used his compound bow.  They sat for about three hours and with only about 10 minutes of "hunting light" left, two does came strolling through.  Tony said Ashton's eyes got all huge and he was whispering as loudly as he quietly could, telling her to shoot it. And would you believe it...she did and she got it!  It was a clean shot and the doe didn't suffer.  She cried a little afterwards and thought gutting it was completely disgusting.  I think the smell is still stuck in her nose.

They took the doe to the processors that night and now our freezer is completely full of venison.  We are supposed to get our deer jerky at the end of the month.

Ashton and Tony are both still floating on cloud 9.  Who would've thought an eleven year old girl could shoot a deer on her first ever night out.  That's right...My Daughter...The Huntress!!!

To be honest, when I first saw the title of your post I thought it was going to be about Sooki after our last conversation. Lol! But, that's awesome that Ashton got a doe! I could never do that. Now the question is this...what are you going to do with all that meat???

Yay for Ashton! (hi, I've blog stalked you for a while, we actually go to church together). I didn't shoot a gun until I was 30 and it was such a confidence booster. I think more girls her age should try it.
