This book is not easy, lighthearted or fun. It is not entertaining. This book is hardcore, explicative and enlightening on the struggles of an addict.
When this book came out, Oprah tagged it as part of her book club. A memoir was how it was marketed. Controversy came later when people learned that this is not a fictional book and that some of the "facts" as depicted by Frey are not actually true.
I knew this going into the book, so I tried to read it as a novel. But whether all of this is true or just how Frey remembers it, I thought the book was a real eye-opener. And if this is how he remembers his 6 weeks in rehab, then so be it...because no matter how you look it, rehab was hard, he was stubborn, and he was tough. But he had to be.
I think this is a good read and should be read if you have any interest in what this life is like.
At the age of 23, James Frey woke up on a plane to find his four front teeth knocked out, his nose broken, and a hold through his cheek. He had no idea where the plane was headed nor any recollection of the past two weeks. An alcholic for ten years and a crack addict for three, he checked into a treatment facility shortly after landing. There he was told he could either stop using or before he reached age 24.
