"Watch and pray so that you will not fall into temptation. The spirit is willing, but the body is weak." Mark 14:38 (NIV)
This body is certainly weak when it comes to Christmas baking! Ugh!!!!
Ever since I have known Tony, his mom has made this FABULOUS chex mix for us at Christmas time. It is actually a Brum family recipe that started with Tony's Grandma Brum...and we call it "Treat"...but I think "crack" is a better descriptor for it.
Now, I know that most of you, when you hear chex mix, you think of the 15 minute in the microwave kind. Well, think again. This stuff takes about 6 hours to bake and it fills your house with such a fabulous aroma! So, for someone who isn't supposed to have carbs...hello!...it is torture.
For the last few years, Tony and I have started making it and giving it to our friends for Christmas. So, to get ready for this years gifting, Tony and I have made 4 batches of the stuff (big "turkey roasting pan size" batches) for the last few days. One of the things you have to do is sample it to make sure the seasoning is right. The first few days, I was doing okay and only eating enough to check the flavor....until yesterday.
Tony had been pretty protective of the treat and made sure I stayed out of it yesterday, but then he had to take the kids to the dentist and the treat and I were ALL ALONE! I got a pretty big handful and began munching away. Within about 15 minutes, my stomach was killing me and I just wanted to take it all back. Since then, the thought of eating it makes me kinda nauseated, so I guess that is a good thing.
Just goes to show, that although I had the surgery, there are still going to be moments of weakness and hard lessons to learn. This is not fool proof and without my commitment, it won't work. Hopefully I don't have to learn this lesson too many more times!
