Road Trip - Day 5b - The Boardwalk

Downtown MB has been working very hard to make the area more "user friendly".  They've put in more restaurants and even built a really pretty boardwalk.  This is where we decided to spend our evening on Wednesday.

We had dinner at SurfShark which is right on the beach and had a lovely view.  (wink, wink)

After dinner we decided to ride the Skywheel.  Ahhh-maze-ing!!!  This is a huge Ferris Wheel that has enclosed gondolas that are temperature controlled.  Perfect!  Tony, Ash and I were in one and Mom, Dad, Collin and Quinn were in another.

Can you tell Ash is nervous?

This is Quinn and Collin in their gondola.

The view was spectacular.  The "flights" last 15 minutes which gave us plenty of time to soak it all up.  You can see the entire coastline of MB.

After the Skywheel we enjoyed the evening and just walked around for a bit.  We found this awesome spot to take family pictures and I think they turned out beautifully.

Only one more day in MB. :(

Road Trip - Day 5a - At the Beach

I am going to break up the 5th day of our vacation into two posts.  I'm afraid if I did it in one post you would be on picture overload.

Beach Fun
Of course we went back to the beach on our second full day in MB.  The weather was perfect.  The sky was overcast and it was just beautiful.  There was bigger surf so the kids did a lot of body surfing and boogie boarding.

My dad was having a ball looking for shells.  He was so focused on finding shells, that he failed to notice the group of girls standing on the beach in bikinis.  It cracked me to watch him...he went on like this for almost 20 minutes.

Surf Lessons

Tony and Vince scheduled surf lessons with a local guy named Jack.  And Jack was the perfect example of a beach bum.  He was so nice and accomodating and did it all with a valley accent.

After the first hour of surfing, Vince was done, so Jack offered to teach Quinn and Collin too.  I couldn't believe how nice he was being.  Quinn was up on the board like he'd been surfing his whole life.  It was crazy how natural he looked on the board.

I'm so happy they all got to surf and mark that off their list of things to do.

Off the Book Shelf - Incarceron by Catherine Fisher

This book is a teen level book, but I was happily surprised by the world that the author creates.  There were moments when it was hard for me to wrap my brain around the fact that the prison, Incarceron, is alive, but by the end, I was able to grasp it a little better.

I loved how there was a heroine to the story and that they didn't portray the girl as the weaker character.  There is a sequel to Incarceron and I am interested in reading it so I can now how the story progresses and ends.

I would recommend this book if you looking for something different from the normal read.  This isn't the type of story that you read everyday.  And no surprise, they are going to make this into a movie.

Incarceron is a prison so vast that it contains not only cells and corridors, but metal forests, dilapidated cities, and wilderness. It has been sealed for centuries, and only one man has ever escaped. Finn has always been a prisoner here. Although he has no memory of his childhood, he is sure he came from Outside. His link to the Outside, his chance to break free, is Claudia, the warden's daughter, herself determined to escape an arranged marriage. They are up against impossible odds, but one thing looms above all: Incarceron itself is alive . . .

Road Trip - Day 4 - Myrtle Beach

Our first full day in Myrtle Beach was beautiful.  The temperature was 85 and there was a nice cool breeze.  We spent the morning at the beach...of course.  There were hardly any crowds and the waves were small, so we were able to really enjoy ourselves.

Veronica was so content in her sand hole.  She played there so nicely.  She and Ash were beach buddies.

We left the beach early afternoon and went back to our rooms to clean up and rest.  I really loved traveling with an infant...it meant I could take a nap when she napped...hehehe.

We decided to try Margaritaville again at Broadway at the Beach.  Unfortunately, at 5pm, the wait would still be 2 hours.  What's up with this place?  It isn't that great...but I guess everyone wanted to try it.  We ended up eating at Carlos and Charlie's.

And what a fun atmosphere it was.  The food?  Not that great.  But we had a good time and enjoyed our evening together.  Then of course we had to do a little shopping...B at the B has the best shops!

It was a great day!

Road Trip - Day 3 - On the Road Again

I had hoped and planned that our day 3 road trip would be uneventful.  At breakfast that morning, Mom passed out motion sick pills since we would be driving through the winding roads of Tennessee.  Ashton thought she could manage without one (and she probably could have had she not been in the very back of the van).

About an hour into our drive, she turned green.  I talked Tony into pulling off and it just so happens we were on a beautiful country road by a stream.  As we were standing there waiting for Ashton to yark (which luckily she did not), we heard some running water and found this beautiful little stream running down the mountainside.

After we got Ashton settled shotgun in the front with Tony, we headed on our to lunch rendezvous ... Spartanburg, SC.  I tell you this because I got to meet my co-worker (and friend) Lisa that lives in Greenville, SC.  Lisa and I have been co-workers since Oct.  We talk virtually everyday.  We cover our work questions in about 10 minutes and proceed to chit chat for usually an hour.  And when we aren't talking live, we are usually sending each other instant messages (some are work related and some are not).  We have developed a very neat relationship and it was so wonderful to get to meet her in person.

After lunch, we drove the remaining 4 hours to Myrtle Beach, SC.  My sister and her bunch flew in and met us there.  We all ended up at the resort at almost the exact same time.  We didn't do anything major that evening, since we needed to get settled into our rooms and put the baby to bed early.  But we did enjoy a nice walk at my favorite shopping area...Broadway at the Beach.  We tried to have to dinner at Margarittaville, but for a party of 10 the wait was going to be 3 hours and by this point it was already 7:30.
It felt great to be at our destination and start making plans for our few days at the beach.

Road Trip - Day 2b - Pigeon Forge

After our skydiving adventure, we didn't have the energy to walk the 3 miles to our next destination.  So we hopped on the public trolley that Pigeon Forge runs around town.  WonderWorks was our stop.

If you've never seen WonderWorks, the building is upside down.  It is an amusement park for the mind with over 100 exhibits inside.

The kids got to rock climb....

Tony and Quinn did the 360 bike....

They played on the three level ropes course....

It was well worth the time and money.  I wish we had one closer.  I would definitely go again.

My favorite part of WonderWorks though was the Far Out Illusion Gallery.  I loved the shadow art.  With no light on the art, it is just a jumble of metal.  But when you turn the light on, you see the shadow that is now the art.  I loved it.

After WonderWorks we went to dinner in The Old Mill District again and then went back to the room to watch the Thunder play the Heat.  It was a fantastic day and a great start to our vacation.

A "Grand" Milestone

I interrupt this vacation montage of posts to tell you about a milestone that I just achieved with my blog.  Can you believe I have posted 1000 posts?  Who would've ever thought that when I started this blog 3'ish years ago, I would've had so much to talk about.  Hehehehe.

Thanks to all my loyal readers for sticking with me.  I love your comments and getting to spew out all of my randomness.

Road Trip - Day 2a - Pigeon Forge

I've decided to break our day in Pigeon Forge into two posts.  We did a lot and I don't want to overwhelm you with one post.

My parents got up early and headed to Asheville to see the Biltmore Mansion.  We decided to stay and play around PF.  Since we didn't have a car, we decided to start our morning with a trek to Mel's Diner which was just down the road from our resort.  Ok, so just down the road was a little further than we thought...about 2 1/2 - 3 miles, but we made it.  Mel's is a neat little 50's style joint....a perfect greasy spoon breakfast after the long walk.

I did a little research before our trip and found that PF has an indoor skydiving facility.  So, after breakfast, we added another mile to our walk and made our way to Flyaway Indoor Skydiving.  At first, we were all going to do it, but Ashton quickly chickened out.  Instead she became our official videographer/photographer.

I have always wanted to do REAL skydiving, but have never had the nerve.  And after doing it indoor, I don't think it will be something I do from a plane.  Don't get me wrong, we had a blast.  Especially Quinn and Tony...but it was exhausting.

Each person gets 3 minutes of flying with an instructor there to help.  During the first attempt, he gets you set up and helps you get used to the positioning.  For me, this was a little tough.  They said to relax, but when I relaxed my back arched way too much and I ended up without enough surface for the wind to hit.  I have no stomach muscles, so by the time I was done, I was spent.

I didn't do the second attempt since I was so tired, but Tony and Quinn did and they loved it.  For the second round, you get to jump into the flow of air.  That's a little scary if you ask me.

You can see two more videos at the links below...

We had so much fun and I am so glad that I can now say I've done it!  I don't think I will do it again, but I have no doubt that Q&T will.  They both would've done it again that day if we had had the time and money.

Road Trip - Day 1 - On the Road to Pigeon Forge

We just returned from our week long family road trip.  Boy, do I have a lot of posts for you this week.  Hopefully I can make them each enjoyable for you.

The road trip was braved by our family of four and my parents.  We left Saturday, June 16 at 4am.  Yep!  Four'freakin'o'clock in the morning!  Our first stop was Pigeon Forge, TN and that was only a 13 hour drive.  Tony was a trooper and drove the entire 13 hours.  We all offered to help with the driving, but Tony says he actually enjoys driving.  Me?  Not so much!

We had never been to Pigeon Forge, but had heard it was like Branson.  I found it to be better than Branson though.  I liked how it was arranged and how you could walk or take the trolley instead of messing with parking.  My parents let us use their timeshare for our two night stay in the beautiful Smoky Mountains.  We had a really neat townhouse at Laurel Crest Resort

We spent our first evening in The Old Mill District of Pigeon Forge.  Such a neat, neat area.  It is like traveling back in time.  The food was delicious and I couldn't help but love the Tennessee accent.  But after the long drive, we were all tired and went to bed early.  We had a big day planned the next morning and needed our rest.

Off the Bookshelf: The House at Riverton

Kate Morton has easily become a favorite author of mine.  I've read every book she has out now and I am counting down to October when her next book will be released.

The House at Riverton was a fantastic story.  Set in the 1920's, it follows a housemaid as she serves a wealthy family and their two daughters.  As a housemaid, one has to be invisible but still meeting every need.  With the invisibility though comes a person privy to secrets and serving a wealthy family will open a young girls eyes to the secrets that lie inside the house.

Morton does a wonderful job of weaving this story and the mystery that develops.  I know I am easy to please and almost always recommend you read books that I've read, but I must say...I highly recommend this book.

Grace Bradley went to work at Riverton House as a servant when she was just a girl, before the First World War. For years her life was inextricably tied up with the Hartford family, most particularly the two daughters, Hannah and Emmeline.
In the summer of 1924, at a glittering society party held at the house, a young poet shot himself. The only witnesses were Hannah and Emmeline and only they -- and Grace -- know the truth.
In 1999, when Grace is ninety-eight years old and living out her last days in a nursing home, she is visited by a young director who is making a film about the events of that summer. She takes Grace back to Riverton House and reawakens her memories. Told in flashback, this is the story of Grace's youth during the last days of Edwardian aristocratic privilege shattered by war, of the vibrant twenties and the changes she witnessed as an entire way of life vanished forever.
The novel is full of secrets -- some revealed, others hidden forever, reminiscent of the romantic suspense of Daphne du Maurier. It is also a meditation on memory, the devastation of war and a beautifully rendered window into a fascinating time in history.

Family Reunion

Last weekend, we had our family reunion at Lake Eufaula.  I really enjoyed seeing all of my aunts and uncles and cousins.  It is crazy to see how grown up all of our kids are getting.

My aunt Brenda always plans activities for the kids and they love it.  Once activity she had them to do this year was an Egg Run.  Ashton was lovin' it...and she won!!!

It was a lot of fun watching the kids play and enjoy time together.

Drive-In Movie Night

Has anyone mentioned that it is summer, lately?  Well, if not...it's time to get your summer on.

One of our favorite things to do in summer is the drive-in movie.  We've been going for years.  I remember taking Quinn when he was still under a year old.

So, this past Friday night, we loaded up the truck and headed to the Winchester Drive-In for some Avengers and MIB3.

The weather was perfect and there were no bugs (unless you count the three inch fireflies that were flying over our heads).  We brought pillows, couch cushions, an air mattress, drinks and candy...we even stopped at The Warren for some fresh popcorn.

Both of the movies were great.  Josh Brolin was fantastic in MIB3.  I couldn't get over how well he played the character K.  He looked and acted just like Tommy Lee Jones.

We hope to make it to a few other movies at the drive-in throughout the summer.  Start a new tradition with your family and go to the drive-in too.

I am married to my best friend and am the mom of two wonderful kids. I have had my ups and downs in regards to health, happiness and weight loss. This blog will tell you about all of those ups and downs and my opinion on the randomness that we call life.
